Fellow members of Red Sox Nation,
Don’t worry about letting Ellsbury go. Even to the Yankees.
Are you scared of a Yankees team that added a leadoff guy? They were not good last year, and that’s after getting ridiculous performances from replacement-level guys, which is completely unsustainable.
Will they get a couple good seasons out of Ellsbury? Yes. Will they get 7? No.
Will they be able to re-sign Robinson Cano with this money (and McCann’s money) on the books? Well, it’s the Yankees, so maybe, but I honestly think this means they’re out of the Cano race. It seems like it was more important to New York’s front office and to Scott Boras to freeze out Jay Z and Cano than it was to get their man. You know, show them who’s boss.
The Yanks minus Cano plus Ellsbury does not a championship-caliber team equal.
